The section is composed of two research-groups, both having our own areas and scientific apparatuses.

ENVIRONMENTAL BIOTECHNOLOGY

MICROBIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY AND AGROINDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGIES

The research-group of Environmental Biotechnology, which is located in a total area of about 60m2 in the third floor of the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering “G.B. Bonino” of Genoa University (address: via Opera Pia 15, I-16145 Genova; Tel.: +390-10-3532931; Fax: +390-10-3532586), develops research-activity in the fields of Biochemical Plants and Biotechnological Applications with a view to the solution of environmental problems (anaerobic digestion, biofiltration of gaseous effluents, decontamination of polluted soils, biological metal removal, microalgae biomass production, etc.). Prof. Attilio Converti (Tel.: +390-10-3532593; E-mail: converti@unige.it) is the scientist-in-charge of this group.

Further research-activity is performed in the fields of polluted soils and microalgae production in the Savona branch of DICheP, under the supervision of Dr. Mario Zilli (Tel.: +390-10-3532915; E-mail: zilli@unige.it)

The research-group of Microbial Biotechnology and Agroindustrial Technologies, which is located in a total area of about 60m2 in the first floor of the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering of Genoa University (address: via Opera Pia 15, I-16145 Genova; Tel.: +390-10-3532584/6493; Fax: +390-10-3532586), carries on research-activity in the fields of Industrial Microbiology applied to the production of substances of industrial interest (fermentations, microbial bio-esterifications and bio-oxidations, enzymatic reactions, vanillin bioproduction, production of xylitol by yeasts, etc.) and Agroindustrial Technologies. Dr. Patrizia Perego (Tel.: +39-010-3532916; E-mail: p.perego@unige.it) is the scientist-in-charge of this group.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY:

The research-activity of this section is focused on the following topics:

fermentation processes;

xylitol production by yeasts;

pretreatments and detoxification of lignocellulosic hydrolysates;

bioesterifications in organic solvents catalyzed by lyophilized cells of fungi;

bio-oxidations catalyzed by microbial cells;

microbial production of vanillin;

microalgae biomass growth for food and environmental purposes;

biofiltration of gaseous effluents polluted by organic substances;

biological decontamination of polluted soils;

aerobic and anaerobic treatments of liquid and solid wastes;

anaerobic digestion of organic residues in suspended and immobilised biomass reactors;

determination of bioenergetic, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of enzymatic and cell systems;

metal biosorption from wastewater;

modelling of batch, fed-batch and continuous bioprocesses;

 

use of bioprocesses for raw materials exploitation;

analysis and quantification of chemical and biological risks;

enzyme production and recovery.

In particular, the Section of Advanced Biotechnology and Agroindustrial Technologies addresses its research-activity towards the contribution of Biotechnology to obtain products of industrial interest by means of innovating biotechnologies, with a view to both the environmental protection and the energy and resources conservation.

The main raw materials used in these transformations are:

detoxified hydrolyzates of starch, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin;

synthetic and complex sugar media; 

different types of wastewaters;

organic fraction of municipal solid wastes;

Agroindustrial residues;

gaseous streams polluted by organic substances;

organic acids and alcohols;

inert supports such as peat and sugarcane bagasse;

contaminated soils.

The main biocatalysts are:

living and lyophilized cells of yeasts, fungi and bacteria, used either in suspension or as biofilms;

suspended and mmobilized enzymes

microalgae biomass;

heterogeneous microbial consortia, like those present in anaerobic digesters, biofilters and activated sludges;

mutant or recombinant cells.

The main products are:

ethanol;

pentitols among which xylitol and mannitol

2,3-butanediol;

biogas;

esters, aldehydes and organic acids;

vanillin;

microalgae biomass.

The main bioprocesses are:

fermentations;

microbial bio-esterifications and bio-oxidations; 

enzymatic transformations;

anaerobic digestion;

metal biosorption;

xylitol production;

biofiltration;

aerobic destruction of pollutants.
