Cracking is a common cause of the degradation of concrete:

• early age cracking (autogenous shrinkage)

• late cracking (drying shrinkage)

• environmental effects

• overstress

Coatings applied over concrete structures tend to crack where cracks develop in the concrete:

• the crack bridging ability (CBA) is defined as the ability of the coating system to take up the elongation resulting from the movements of the crack sides
